Cgunu/Nkabom speaks to a coming together and collaboration in the Khoekhoe and Fante languages respectively. This art exhibition represents an exciting collaboration between AFRA’s GroundZEROCultureCLUB, TO CHOOSE ART Gallery from Germany and THE DAILY MUSIC SHOW. The exhibition initiatives and exchange of views and perspectives between emerging artists from South Africa and Ghana and showcases the diversity in African art. The exhibition furthers the GroundZEROCultureCLUB platforms aim to provide opportunities of hope to talented emerging artists. The opening on 2 January 2020 was chosen because of the significance of the 2nd January or “Tweede Nuwe Jaar” in Cape Town culture. “Tweede Nuwe Jaar” was first the day when Dutch colonialists gave slaves the day off to celebrate the new year in their own way but it became the day where the abolishment of slavery was celebrated. This day holds a bittersweet reminder of what many who live in Cape Town and the Western Cape’s ancestors had to endure. It holds true for many African countries and Ghana in particular was one of the first African countries to celebrate independence from British colonialism and is no stranger to slavery. We will use this opportunity to transform THE DAILY MUSIC SHOW venue into one of only a few black owned galleries in Cape Town that provides free access to emerging African artists for this period.
We invite you to come and support the GroundZEROCultureCLUB initiative and through that support talented young and emerging artists. All art work will be for sale and the proceeds not only go to the artists in order to keep their dreams alive but to the the GroundZEROCultureCLUB project to ensure many more young African artists have an opportunity to showcase their work, connect with people who can nurture their talents and earn an income. Art is a powerful medium to communicate strong messages and we want to ensure that through our exhibitions we communicate the creation opportunities of hope for young people.
Access to the ground floor exhibition is free between on 2 January 2020 but we encourage visitors to buy a R50 ticket to access the music, poetry and art show between 6:30pm to 8:30pm on the lower ground floor in support of our project. The music and poetry will showcase some great young musicians and poets.
